Winter is a time for local celebrations and traditions, especially the Fasnacht or Carnival parades in Basel, Luzern and Zürich. There are also many winter sports activities at this time of year. The calendar change from the Julian to the Gregorian in the 16th century, when 13 days were lost, is celebrated by a colourful parade of so-called 'silvesterchlausen' through the streets of Appenzell. As this event falls on a Sunday this year, the parade will take place on Saturday 12 Jan.

This is the biggest and most colourful carnival parade in Switzerland. The Morgestraich begins at 4:00am on Monday 11th February, lights in the town are turned out and there are candle-lit parades with costumed musicians over a 3-day period. A must-see once during your stay in Switzerland.
