Theatre group preparations for Calendar Girls show
getting into top gear

27 April 2010

The On Stage group has been working on its upcoming revue 'ZIWA's Calendar Girls' for a number of months now, and at last the whole concept and programme is coming together well. Thanks to chairlady Christine Huvos's determination, co-chairlady Anne Jiricny's attention to detail, and director Julie-anne Smith's professional experience, what once seemed in doubt is now a fact on the ZIWA 2010 calendar.

So save the date of Thursday 28 October at 1800 in the Karl der Grosse Zentrum, Zürich, for what is sure to be an entertaining evening.

The concept was inspired by the British movie Calendar Girls, which was based on a true story about a group of rather sedate Women's Institute ladies who decided to sell a nude calendar to benefit a cancer charity after one of their members succumbed to the disease. The film starred Helen Mirren and Julie Walters among others and showed how the group of twelve ladies of a certain age hired a professional photographer to snap them in provocative positions, although not in full frontal nudity, and ended up taking their story to Hollywood. A stage show has since evolved from the inspiring concept.

This show, which will feature twelve ZIWA ladies celebrating their multinational diversity and talent for drama, song and dance, has been planned to commemorate the sad death in March 2010 from a brain tumour of one of the group's original members, Rachael D'Antonio. Rachael was a party to the decision and the proceeds from the show will go towards a favourite charity of hers and her husband's, the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust.

The October show will feature an apéro with a glass of prosecco and a tasty snack prior to the one-hour performance. Look out for ZIWA ladies of all shapes and sizes stripping off their familiar cultural veneer to show off another side of themselves. Tickets costing CHF30 for members and CHF 40 for guests will be on sale later in the year, the venue is booked, and rehearsals are well in hand, so make a note in your diaries now: a show not to be missed for any reason.
