English in Action
Exploring the English We Use: a Program for 9- to 12-year-olds
From 2. to 6. May 2011 (spring break) in Jugendkulturhaus SUST, Wädenswil (ZH)

English in Action is a pilot project of ZIWA ReachOut (*) in association with Jugendarbeit Wädenswil (**). Its aim is to develop intercultural understanding through play and help children feel more comfortable about communicating in English. Workshops to choose from include: sports, singing, science, cooking, art, and games. Activities range from making the world's best scones; to playing Snake and Ladders, Pictionary, and Jeopardy!; to Line Dancing; to playing Cricket and Softball.
The financial support of Canton Zürich under grant number K-66-11 is gratefully acknowledged.
"Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give." – Eleanor Roosevelt
It's all about communicating and connecting in this era of internationalization. English has become a basic tool for any global worker or student. It is either the official or a widely spoken language in 56 countries across the world and is fast becoming the lingua franca of South East Asia and the Pacific region. Acting in the globalized world requires English as an essential tool for communication, and feeling comfortable communicating in English allows us to go everywhere and to establish a connection with people from countries around the world.
However, to feel comfortable communicating in English requires more than just learning the words. There is a human aspect to all communication: the message we try to send is not always the message that's received, so clear communication requires a lot of experience.
ReachOut will connect with the children of Wädenswil.
We will help the children with their English while improving our German.
We will be learning something about each other through fun activities, sports, science, cooking, reading, art, and singing.
We will take notice of what others see in us and how it might differ from what we see in ourselves.
We will give our time and enthusiasm to this project, and we are delighted that Canton Zürich is supporting us.
Then join us and help us with the activities at the Jugendkulturhaus. We look forward to working with you as we help local young people become more confident and competent users of English.
